How to Answer: “Do you have any questions for us?”
A complete guide to answering this common interview question — including what interviewers are really looking for, practical tips, and a worked example answer.
What interviewers are really asking
Always have questions — ideally three to five prepared. Good questions show curiosity, preparation, and strategic thinking. Ask about the team, the challenges ahead, how success is measured, and what the interviewer finds most rewarding about their work. Avoid asking about holiday entitlement or salary at this stage.
Tips
- Prepare at least five questions — some may be answered during the interview.
- Ask about real challenges, not just successes.
- Ask what success looks like in this role in 90 days.
- Ask the interviewer about their own experience at the company.
- Never say 'No, I think you've covered everything'.
Example answer
Sample response
“Yes — three questions if that's okay. First: what does success look like in this role in the first 90 days, and how will you measure it? Second: what's the biggest challenge the team is navigating right now that the person in this role will need to get up to speed on quickly? And third — what's made you stay at this company? I find that's often the most honest signal about what it's actually like to work here.”
Adapt this to your own experience — never use any example answer verbatim.
Use the STAR method
Structure your answer as: Situation (brief context), Task (your specific responsibility), Action (what you personally did), Result (the quantified outcome). Most strong interview answers follow this pattern.
